How It Works

1. Upload a photo

From your free ScubaSnap profile, upload a clear underwater photo of a fish, nudibranch, or coral.

2. Underwater check

ScubaSnap quickly verifies it's a genuine underwater photo before running identification.

3. AI vision model

A vision-capable AI model examines the photo and identifies the species, plus details like habitat and diet.

4. Get your result

A common name, scientific name, and a confidence score — save it to your profile or flag it for review.

Accuracy & Limitations

80%+ High confidence — usually reliable, though it's always worth a sanity check against a field guide for tricky look-alikes.
50-79% Moderate confidence — a reasonable guess, but treat exact species-level details as provisional.
<50% Low confidence — treat this as a rough starting point, not a final answer.

What tends to work well

  • Clear, well-lit, close-up photos
  • Distinctive, well-known species
  • Fish, nudibranchs, and coral — the categories the AI is built for

What makes it harder

  • Murky or low-visibility water
  • Juveniles, which often look very different from adults
  • Closely related "look-alike" species
  • Distant, partially obscured, or unusually angled shots

Identification is currently scoped to fish, nudibranchs, and coral — it won't attempt to identify marine mammals, crustaceans, or anything outside that scope. Every result includes a confidence score plus a way to flag it for admin review, so you're never just taking the AI's word for it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Upload a clear underwater photo and ScubaSnap's AI — a vision-capable model — analyzes it and returns a common name, scientific name, and other details for fish, nudibranchs, and coral, along with a confidence score so you can judge how sure it is.

Yes. Creating a ScubaSnap account and using the AI identification tool is free, and includes 3 identifications per day. You do need a free account to upload a photo — we don't offer an anonymous demo — so we can save your result to your profile and let you flag anything that looks wrong. If you want more than the free daily allowance, our separate ScubaSnap Chrome extension offers additional identifications, including paid credit options, for divers who need more.

It depends on the photo and the species. Every identification gets a confidence score from 0-100%: 80% and above is generally reliable, 50-79% is a reasonable guess worth double-checking, and below 50% should be treated as a rough starting point rather than a final answer. Clear, well-lit, close-up photos tend to score highest.

Fish, nudibranchs, and coral photographed underwater — the categories our AI is built and tested for. It isn't designed to identify marine mammals, crustaceans, topside animals, or non-underwater photos.

Every result can be flagged for admin review right from your identification history, and our team periodically reviews flagged and low-confidence results. Species data also improves over time as the community and our admins refine it.
